On April 14th 2019, the Ta Quang Buu Prize organization committee held a meeting to evaluate and select from 08 nominations for the 2019 Ta Quang Buu Prize (including 06 nominations for Main prize and 02 nominations for Young scientist prize). Attending the selection meeting, there were Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Pham Cong Tac, President of the Prize organization committee, and 09 members of the Prize organization committee, including: Prof. Dr. Ngo Viet Trung (Chairman of the Prize organization committee), Prof. Nguyen Duc Chien (Vice chairman of the Prize organization committee), Prof. Dr. Pierre Dariulat, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Chien, Prof. Dr. Dam Thanh Son (Chicago University – USA) , Prof. Dr. Ho Tu Bao, Prof. Dr. Phan Van Tan, Prof. Dr. Le Thanh Hoa, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Linh Toan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quoc Hung. There were also the representatives of Ministry of Science and Technology units, media agencies attended and reported (participating only in the opening part).

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister Pham Cong Tac said that, according to the overall evaluation of scientists, after 6 times of organizing the Prize, the number of applications and the quality of the works all increased. Deputy Minister considered this is very good information for the Prize. “Currently, there are many awards and prizes in our country, but the Ta Quang Buu Prize has got a certain position in the scientific community” – said by Deputy Minister. Referring to the quality and prestige of the Prize, Deputy Minister emphasized that they depend largely not only on the quality of applicants, but also the rigor in the evaluation and selection process has done by members of committee. Deputy Minister Pham Cong Tac expressed his hope that the Prize will continue to be promoting and affirming its prestige in the scientific community.
In 2019, National Foundation for Science and Technology Development received 45 applications for the Prize, including 11 applications are nominated by organizations and 34 applications are self – nominated. According to the evaluation process, the applications had evaluated by the Science specialized committees before were proposed to the Prize organization committee for the further consideration. Then, the proposed applications by Science specialized committees shall be send out for further evaluation by international scientists. Prior to the selection meeting of the Prize organization committee, information on the peer review would be sent to all members of the Prize organization committee.

Speaking at the opening of meeting, Chairman of the Prize organization committee – Prof. Dr. Ngo Viet Trung said “With the quality of 08 applications in comparison with previous years, this year will probably be a difficult year for selecting because all candidates have done excellence scientific works. I hope the worthiest scientific works will be selected”.

After the meeting, National Foundation for Science and Technology Development will summarize and report the results to the Ministry of Science and Technology. Information about the award-winning scientists will be published after the Ministry of Science and Technology’s official approval. The Prize Ceremony is scheduled on the 60th anniversary of Vietnam Science and Technology Day (May 18th).
